Lifespan: 5-7 years. 1 guinea pig year ≈ 12 human years.
Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) live 5-7 years on average, with some reaching 8-10 years. They mature quickly — sexually mature by 3-4 weeks (males) and 4-6 weeks (females). A 1-year-old guinea pig is roughly equivalent to a young adult human. They age faster in their first year. Signs of aging: reduced activity, thinner coat, dental problems, and cataracts. Guinea pigs are unique among rodents for requiring dietary vitamin C (like humans). Senior guinea pigs (5+ years) need softer food, more vitamin C, and regular vet checkups. Provide constant hay, fresh vegetables daily, and a spacious cage with a companion (they're social animals).
